Gnome Click: a free 8-bit gnome clicker game

Gnome Click is a free clicker game you play right in your browser. You're a gnome hired by the Endless Button Co. to press one big red button. Every press earns a Gnome Token. Spend your tokens on helpers who press for you and on upgrades that make every press count for more, and climb the company's tower one floor at a time.

It takes seconds to start and a few minutes to get hooked, but the tower is tall: reaching the top takes 80 hours or more. Along the way, letters from home, a grumpy boss and a strange hum from downstairs tell a story with two very different endings. No download, no sign-up: pick a name and press.

How to play

  1. Press the big red button. Every press earns Gnome Tokens. Press fast to fill the heat bar: when it's full, FEVER multiplies your presses and your helpers for a few seconds.
  2. Hire helpers. From a Pointy Stick to a Button Dragon and far beyond, helpers press the button for you every second, even while you read your mail.
  3. Buy upgrades. Upgrades make your helpers stronger, make each press worth more and unlock new tricks.
  4. Catch golden mushrooms. They pop up now and then. Catch one for lucky tokens, a mushroom frenzy that multiplies production by 7, or a click storm that makes every press worth 777 times more.
  5. Pass performance reviews. Mr. Grimble sometimes sets a quick challenge: press a number of times, earn some tokens, hire helpers, catch a mushroom. Pass it for a reward.
  6. Climb the tower. Your floor is the number of digits in the tokens you've earned this pay period. The roof is at a googol tokens: a 1 with a hundred zeros.
  7. Send tokens home. From Floor 10, the Mail Room lets you send your savings home and start a new pay period. You collect Hope, which boosts production forever.

Tips for new gnomes

  • Hire your first helpers early: in the first minutes, production matters more than pressing.
  • Catch golden mushrooms during a fever when you can. A click storm in a fever is enormous.
  • Only accept reviews you can finish. Declining costs you nothing.
  • When new floors come slowly, send tokens home: Hope makes the next climb much faster.
  • Seniority grows with time on the job: production rises by 14% every half hour you're at work.
  • Read your mail and the journal. The story is told in letters, and not all of them are what they seem.

Fair play

World Ranks are for real gnomes. Only real presses count, up to 15 a second, and the button jams if you press too fast or too evenly, so autoclickers get nowhere. After 10 minutes without a press, click, key or scroll your gnome dozes off, and now and then Mr. Grimble hands you a timesheet to sign. Every score is checked against what the best possible player could reach in the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gnome Click free?

Yes. The whole game is free to play. Premium ($0.99 a month) is optional: it keeps your progress in the cloud, removes ads and lets your helpers work while you're away.

Do I need to download anything or sign up?

No. Gnome Click runs in your web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Pick a gnome name and press the button.

Does it work on phones, tablets and Chromebooks?

Yes. Gnome Click runs in any modern web browser. On a phone or tablet you tap the button; on a Chromebook or computer you click it or press the Space bar.

Can I play with the keyboard?

Yes. The Space bar presses the big red button. Every other button can be reached with Tab and pressed with Enter.

Does my progress save?

Free gnomes start a new game when the page reloads, but your best results stay on the World Ranks. Premium saves your progress in the cloud, on any device.

How do I cancel Premium?

Open Premium in the game and choose Manage subscription, then sign in with the email you paid with. You keep Premium until the end of the month you've paid for. You can also email hello@gnomeclick.com.

How long is Gnome Click?

You'll get the hang of it in a few minutes, but reaching the top of the tower takes 80 hours or more.

Can I use an autoclicker?

No. Only real presses count, at most 15 a second, and the button jams when presses come too fast or too evenly.

Why did my gnome fall asleep?

After 10 minutes without a press, click, key or scroll, your gnome dozes off: Seniority stops and helpers slow down. Press anything to wake up.

What is the timesheet?

Every 30 to 60 minutes on the job, Mr. Grimble asks you to sign your timesheet within two minutes, to prove you're still at work.

How do the World Ranks work?

Two boards rank you against gnomes all over the world: All Time, by every token you've ever earned, and This Week, by your best pay period this week. Every score is checked against what the best possible player could reach in the same play time.

What's at the top of the tower?

You'll have to press to find out. There are two endings.

Which languages can I play in?

Twelve: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese. Switch any time in Settings.

1% of every Premium payment goes to removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, through Stripe Climate.
